The Short Answer

If the damage is a chip smaller than a quarter or a crack shorter than 6 inches, it can almost always be repaired. Anything larger, deeper, or in the driver's direct line of sight typically requires full replacement. Here's how to think through it.

When Repair Works

Windshield repair uses a UV-cured resin injected into the damaged area to restore structural integrity and optical clarity. It's the right call when:

  • The chip is smaller than a quarter — bull's-eye chips, half-moon chips, and star breaks that fit within roughly one inch in diameter are ideal repair candidates.
  • The crack is under 6 inches — most single-line cracks of this length respond well to resin injection.
  • Damage is not in the driver's primary viewing area — repairs leave a faint mark; chips directly in front of the driver may still need replacement.
  • The glass isn't shattered — repair only works when the outer layer of laminated glass is intact. Multiple cracks radiating from one point (a "spider web") usually indicate replacement is needed.

Repair takes 20–40 minutes and is often completely free with comprehensive auto insurance in Texas. Texas law requires insurers to waive the deductible for glass repairs — not just replacements.

When Replacement Is Required

Some damage simply cannot be repaired safely. You need a full windshield replacement when:

  • The crack is longer than 6 inches — longer cracks compromise the structural integrity of the glass.
  • The inner layer is damaged — modern windshields are laminated (two glass layers with a plastic interlayer). If the inner layer is cracked, replacement is the only safe option.
  • Damage is at the edge — cracks that reach within 2 inches of the windshield frame can spread rapidly and affect how the glass holds in a crash.
  • The chip is in the driver's line of sight — even a repaired chip can distort vision slightly; replacement is safer here.
  • The damage is more than 3 months old — dirt and debris fill old damage and prevent proper resin bonding. Fresh damage repairs better.

What About Insurance?

Comprehensive auto insurance typically covers both repair and replacement, but the rules differ:

  • Repairs in Texas: Texas law waives your deductible entirely for glass repairs. If you have comprehensive coverage, chip repair is $0 out of pocket.
  • Replacements: Your standard deductible applies. If your deductible is $500 and the replacement costs $350, you pay the full $350. If it costs $600, you pay $500.

AutoGlass Rehab verifies your coverage before any work begins and handles all paperwork directly with your insurer. Call (214) 328-0900 or request a free quote to get started.

Act Fast — Chips Spread

Texas heat, highway vibrations, and temperature swings cause chips to spread into cracks quickly. A $0 repair today can become a $300+ replacement next week. If you have a chip, get it looked at within 48 hours.
