Your Car Window Was Smashed — What to Do First
A car break-in is a stressful situation. If your car window was broken, act in this order:
- Call the police first. You need a police report for your insurance claim. Most insurers require one for theft and vandalism.
- Document the damage. Take photos of the broken window, vehicle interior, and any missing items or other damage. Do this before cleaning up the glass.
- Secure valuables. If items were left on the back seat, move them now. If the theft completed, document what was taken for your claim.
- Cover the opening temporarily (see below) if you can't get immediate service or if rain is coming.
- Call AutoGlass Rehab at (469) 790-2619 — we offer same-day window replacement anywhere in DFW. We come to where you are.
How to Temporarily Cover a Broken Car Window
If you need to cover it while waiting for repair:
- Clear plastic sheeting and packing tape — available at any convenience store. Cover the full opening from both inside and outside.
- Large trash bag — works in a pinch but isn't fully waterproof.
- Don't use cardboard — cardboard gets soaked in rain and can damage your door frame.
Don't drive with plastic sheeting covering a side window — it blocks driver visibility and can be dangerous. Only drive if absolutely necessary.
Does Insurance Cover a Broken Window From a Break-In?
Yes. Broken windows from theft are covered under comprehensive auto insurance. Like hail damage, break-ins are "no-fault" events and generally do not affect your premium.
- The broken window itself: Covered under comprehensive coverage minus your deductible.
- Stolen items from inside: Generally covered under personal property coverage on your homeowners or renters insurance — not your auto policy.
- Damage to the window regulator: Covered if the window mechanism was damaged during the break-in.
AutoGlass Rehab handles your insurance claim directly — we open the claim, get authorization, and complete the window replacement same day. No shop visit required.
How Long Does Side Window Replacement Take?
Side window replacement typically takes 45–90 minutes on-site. Door glass is generally faster to replace than a windshield — there's no ADAS calibration involved and no adhesive cure time for door windows.
Most door windows are plain tempered glass (not laminated like windshields), making them straightforward to replace. We stock glass for all popular DFW vehicles and can serve most customers same-day.
High-Risk Break-In Areas in DFW
Car break-ins are most common in dense urban areas, near shopping centers, and in poorly lit parking lots. In DFW, higher-risk areas include parts of Dallas (Deep Ellum, Uptown, Knox-Henderson), the Arlington Entertainment District, and some retail parking corridors in Garland and Mesquite. If you're in a higher-risk area, avoid leaving visible items on the back seat.
