Types of Repairable Windshield Chips and Cracks

Not all windshield damage is created equal. Understanding what type of chip or crack you have is the first step in determining whether it can be repaired or needs a full replacement. Here are the most common types of repairable windshield damage:

  • Bullseye chip: Circular damage caused by a direct rock impact. Usually repairable if under 1 inch in diameter. It's the most common type of chip and the easiest to repair.
  • Star break: Cracks radiating outward from a central impact point, resembling a star. Repairable if the total diameter is under 3 inches. Resin can fill each radiating line.
  • Half-moon: Similar to a bullseye but with a partial circle instead of a full one. Same repair criteria as bullseye chips.
  • Combination break: A combination of star and bullseye with a central impact point and radiating cracks. Repairable if the total damage area is small.
  • Single-line crack: A single linear crack. Repairable if under 6 inches long and not at the windshield edge.

How to Stop a Windshield Crack from Spreading

When you notice a crack in your windshield, every hour counts. Temperature changes, road vibrations, and wind pressure can cause a small crack to spread rapidly across the entire windshield. Here's how to temporarily stop a windshield crack from spreading:

  • Apply clear nail polish or super glue: As a temporary sealant, apply a thin coat over the crack. This keeps moisture and debris out, which cause spreading.
  • Place clear packing tape over the damage: Cover the damage with clear tape to keep out moisture and debris. Apply on the outside of the windshield.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes: Don't blast the defroster on a cold windshield. The rapid temperature change stresses the glass and spreads cracks. Warm up gradually.
  • Drive gently: Avoid potholes, slamming doors, and debris-heavy roads. Vibrations and impacts make cracks grow.
  • Get it repaired within 24-48 hours: Every day you wait, the crack is more likely to spread. Dirt and moisture also fill the crack, making the eventual repair less effective.

IMPORTANT: These are temporary measures, not permanent fixes. They are only meant to buy you time until you can get a professional repair or replacement.

DIY Windshield Crack Repair: Does It Work?

DIY crack repair kits like those made by Permatex and Rain-X are widely available and cost $10-20. But do they actually work? For small chips only, they can provide a functional repair. However, no consumer kit can effectively fix cracks longer than 3 inches. Even "repaired" cracks may still be visible and can spread later.

DIY kits are fine for tiny chips you don't want to claim on insurance. For anything else, professional repair is worth the investment. For a detailed guide on kit selection and use, read our windshield repair kits guide.

Professional Windshield Crack Repair Process

Professional windshield chip repair uses commercial-grade equipment and materials that aren't available in consumer kits. Here's how it works:

  • Step 1: Inspection. The technician inspects the damage using magnification to determine repairability, depth, and extent of the damage.
  • Step 2: Cleaning. The area is cleaned and dried thoroughly. Any loose debris or residue from previous DIY repair attempts is removed.
  • Step 3: Vacuum injector. A vacuum injector is placed over the damage. The vacuum draws out trapped air from the chip or crack.
  • Step 4: Resin injection. Professional-grade resin is injected under pressure. The pressure forces resin into every point of the damage for a complete repair.
  • Step 5: UV curing. A UV curing lamp hardens the resin in minutes. This is much faster and more consistent than relying on sunlight.
  • Step 6: Finishing. Excess resin is scraped and polished. The result: 90-95% clarity restoration and full structural integrity.

When You Need Full Windshield Replacement

Windshield chip repair isn't always the answer. These situations call for a full windshield replacement:

  • Cracks longer than 6 inches: If the crack is longer than a dollar bill, repair won't restore structural integrity.
  • Damage in the driver's primary viewing area: Even excellent repairs leave a slight mark that can affect vision. For safety, replacement is the better option.
  • Edge cracks: Damage within 2 inches of the frame compromises the seal and structural integrity of the entire windshield.
  • Spider web/shatter patterns: Multiple cracks radiating from a point indicate the glass is structurally compromised.
  • Inner layer damage: If you can feel the crack on the inside of the windshield, both layers of the laminated glass are damaged.
  • Old damage (more than 30 days): Dirt and moisture make old damage much harder to repair effectively.
