What Is ADAS?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the suite of electronic safety features that help prevent collisions, keep you in your lane, and maintain safe following distances. Common ADAS features include:
- Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
- Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
- Traffic Sign Recognition
Most of these systems rely on a forward-facing camera mounted to or near the windshield. When you replace the windshield, that camera moves — even by a fraction of a degree. That shift is enough to make automatic braking engage late or lane assist steer incorrectly.
Why Calibration Can't Be Skipped
A camera that's off by just 1 degree can delay automatic emergency braking by 40+ feet at highway speeds. At 65 mph, that's the difference between stopping safely and a collision.
Every major vehicle manufacturer — Ford, Toyota, GM, Honda, BMW, Mercedes, and others — requires windshield camera recalibration after replacement. This isn't optional; it's a safety specification.
Static vs. Dynamic Calibration
There are two main calibration methods, and your vehicle may require one or both:
- Static calibration — Performed in a controlled environment with the vehicle stationary. Technicians place precise calibration targets in front of the vehicle and use OEM-grade equipment to align the camera. Takes 30–60 minutes.
- Dynamic calibration — The vehicle is driven at specific speeds while the camera calibrates itself using real road markings and features. Takes 20–45 minutes of driving.
AutoGlass Rehab performs both static and dynamic calibration on-site using manufacturer-specified equipment. We don't sub out calibration to a third party — it's done at your location by the same certified technicians who installed your glass.
Does Your Vehicle Need It?
If your vehicle was manufactured after 2015 and has any of the ADAS features listed above, it almost certainly needs calibration after a windshield replacement. Vehicles most commonly requiring calibration include:
- Ford F-150, F-250, Explorer, Escape (2018+)
- Toyota Camry, RAV4, Tacoma, Highlander (2018+)
- Honda CR-V, Accord, Civic (2017+)
- Chevrolet Silverado, Equinox, Tahoe (2018+)
- BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, X5 (2017+)
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class, GLE (2017+)
When you call for a windshield replacement quote, tell us your year, make, and model. We'll confirm whether calibration is required and include it in your service.
What Does Calibration Cost?
Many insurance policies cover ADAS calibration as part of the windshield replacement claim. AutoGlass Rehab bills your insurer directly for both the glass and the calibration. Get a free quote and we'll verify your coverage.
